Bob Callan Trail

The hidden gem of Cumberland

Cumberland is Cobb County’s largest commercial district, but it serves as a hub for 38 miles of vast and vibrant urban trails to discover. Adding to the area’s beauty, the newly completed Bob Callan Trail is a critical part of that trail network, serving as a scenic connection for the community to the Chattahoochee River National Recreational Area (CRNRA).

The trail is named for Bob Callan, a long-serving engineer with the Federal Highway Administration, who championed this innovative and unique project from concept to reality. What began as a bold conversation nearly four-decades ago, is now a lasting testament to visionary collaboration among Cobb County and the Cumberland CID.

Bob Callan Trail History

Today, the four-mile pristine pathway links Terrell Mill Road to the Chattahoochee River at Paces Mill, offering exercise, escape, and exploration for wellness seekers, adventurers, and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Equally important, it supports commuters with a safe, connected, and uniquely beautiful route for those traveling to work within Cumberland’s thriving commercial district.

Phase 1
Phase One of the project kicked off in the 90s as an ambitious $3.6 million component of the Kennedy Interchange, now Cumberland Boulevard. Fast forward to 2007, and this rolling run, originally known as Rottenwood Creek Trail, was completed with its trailhead at Paces Mill/Palisades Unit within the lush CRNRA.
Phase 2
In 2009, Phase Two planning began on the third mile of the Bob Callan Trail. A decade later, the $9.1 million extension was completed, just north of I-285 and stretching along Rottenwood Creek to Interstate North Parkway.
Phase 3
Phase Three ($7.4 million), the final stage of the Bob Callan Trail effort, opened the Windy Hill Road and Bentley Road section in 2025, with a ribbon-cutting marking the completion of one of CCID’s longest tenured projects.

Benefits of the Bob Callan Trail

Providing Greater Access and Connectivity

In additional to providing connection to the Chattahoochee River, the Bob Callan Trail provides a valuable transportation resource for the community. The trail gives users a safe and alternative means of accessing Cumberland’s job center with 3,300 business and 84,000 jobs.

The trail also serves as a recreational asset for trail enthusiasts. The three mile paved trail provides the ideal surface for walking, biking, running, and enjoying nature.

Providing Greater Access and Connectivity

In partnership with Cobb County and the Atlanta Regional Commission, the Cumberland CID celebrated the completion of the final mile of the Bob Callan Trail with a community ribbon cutting on September 11th, 2025. The final phase delivers a new trailhead at Windy Hill Road and completes the four-mile multi-use trail connecting Terrell Mill Road to the Chattahoochee River at Paces Mill.

The ribbon cutting brought together community leaders, including Cobb County Chairwoman Lisa Cupid, and representatives from the Cumberland CID and regional partners. The new trailhead welcomes a wide range of users with the addition of accessible parking, shaded seating, bike repair stations, wayfinding signage, and access to the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area.

Celebrating the Final Connection

The Cumberland CID, along with its many partners, held a ribbon cutting for the third mile of the Bob Callan Trail in July of 2019. The ribbon cutting was held at the trailhead of Interstate North Parkway. This portion of the trail was nearly $9.1 million.

Bob Callan Trail Extension

(under construction)

Currently, the Cumberland CID and Cobb County are working to extend the Bob Callan Trail again. From its northmost access point at 180 Interstate North Parkway to Windy Hill Road with a new trailhead proposed at Windy Hill Road. Cobb County’s recently opened Windy Hill/Terrell Mill Connector to the north will connect seamlessly into the Bob Callan Trail once both are complete.

The fourth and final mile of the Bob Callan Trail will include a trailhead that will feature exterior amenities that include a workout area, granite chairs, bike share, gateway signage, and more.
